Kidney Care Matters Online December 2011

Click here to view the latest issue

Welcome to the December issue of Kidney Care Matters. It’s full of the latest news in kidney care, including a new film that highlights the benefits of establishing young adult clinics for patients with long term conditions. I hope the film, which follows a group of kidney transplant patients meeting in a sports centre for their clinic, will encourage other healthcare teams to consider setting up similar clinics to provide tailored support for young adult patients.

This month we are carrying out a survey among clinical biochemists, to learn more about how e-alert systems can be used to identify and manage patients with acute kidney injury (AKI). There is also news of a set of AKI competencies that has just launched, designed to provide consistent standards for all staff involved in the care of acutely ill patients.

There is lots of news from NICE this month, including the launch of a new quality improvement guide to prevent and control healthcare infections. We are also pleased to announce that a podcast about the clinical guideline on anaemia management in CKD is the most popular podcast NICE has ever produced, with almost 2,000 downloads so far. Finally, the call for entries for the NICE Shared Learning Awards 2012 is now open, and I hope you will consider submitting an entry. Sandip Mitra and the home dialysis team at Manchester Royal Infirmary scooped the top award this year, and it would be a real achievement to see a kidney care team take home the prize for the second year in a row!

There are lots of other stories, and, as always, you will find details of the most up-to-date publications, and links to useful websites, recent research articles and the latest issues of other kidney-focused newsletters.

Finally, I hope you all enjoy a relaxing break this festive season, and come back in 2012 ready for an exciting year ahead.

The Kidney Foundation of Canada plans for this resource to continue to grow and evolve: more recipes and meal plans will be added regularly, seasonal and celebration meals will be included and we encourage you to submit your recipes, thoughts and ideas. Bon Appétit!

Here's one of their sample recipees:

Renal and Diabetic Exchanges

2 protein
2 starch
1 1/2 vegetable

Ingredients

200g ground lean pork (about 1/2 a pound)
1 medium zucchini, chopped
2 medium red peppers, sliced thin
1/2 large onion, diced
1 clove of garlic, finely chopped
Pinch of chili pepper
75ml tablespoons of olive oil (about 5 tbsp)
200ml of homemade chicken or vegetable stock (just under 1 cup)
350g of fresh fettuccine
20ml of truffle oil (4 teaspoons)

Directions

For the Sauce
Heat the olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. (You will be adding the pasta to the pan once it is ready so make sure the pan is large enough).
Add the onion and garlic and once they turn golden brown add the ground pork.
Turn up the heat slightly and cook the meat, stirring regularly, until cooked (about 8 minutes). Add the red pepper, zucchini and chili pepper and cook for about 5 minutes until soft. Add the stock and continue cooking for another 8 minutes. Don’t overcook the sauce or it will become dry!

For the Pasta
Add the pasta to boiling water. Fresh pasta does not take a lot of time to cook. Five minutes should be enough. Drain the pasta and add into the pan with the sauce.
Stir until it is creamy and blended with the sauce. You can add back some of the cooking water if the pasta looks dry. Drizzle 1 teaspoon of truffle oil over each serving.

Self Care week - forward of Kidney Care Matter

Written by Katy Draper

Self Care Week is a government initiative to promote self care and ensure that people with long term conditions are aware of the tools and resources that are available to help them self care. For kidney patients self care covers a range of activities, from taking their own blood pressure readings to starting haemodialysis at home. However big or small the step, evidence suggests that patients who self care tend to have improved health outcomes.

This special edition contains the latest self care news from and for the kidney community, including an update of our latest project to implement care planning into kidney services. We are supporting 23 kidney units across England to develop new ways to embed care planning, and the outcomes will be shared with other units and with other long term condition service areas.  There is also an article on the work being carried out in Leicester to develop exercise programmes for kidney patients, and you can download a patient-facing advice guide, with practical tips for exercise. We are backing the call from NHS Lincolnshire for ‘community self care’ so that families, friends and carers ensure that the elderly aren’t at risk from dehydration this winter, which is one of the leading causes for the rapid growth in acute kidney injury.  Finally, there is a report of a new online network that has been set up for young adult kidney patients in London and the South West, which will help to engage young people through peer support.

Reading whilst on dialysis - your help please!

I've received a request from Ludovica Zengiaro, the content of which is self explanatory below.  If there are any dialysis users out there who would be able to hep him with his research do please get in touch with him. Thanks!

"My name is Ludovica Zengiaro and I am a student from Politecnico di Milano. I study Industrial Design and I have a very important laboratory during this semester which is the one that'll prepare my final thesis. The course is named "the pleasure of reading" and we have to make a project around the world of books and lectures.
I'm really interested into the hospital framework, so I've decided to focus into a very specifical user which will be the patient on dialysis. I think that this particular patient needs an aid that might help him sustaining a book during dialysis. I've also thought that this specifical patient has to wait for several hours during his therapy, so it's the perfect user that might requires to read to pass his annoying time.
I have to admit that I've never been on dialysis and I've never had bad injuries (except a thousand visits to first aid because of my really fragile ankles), so I don't exactly know which are the main problems of a patient, but I do really want to make a good project and to create a very useful aid for reading.

My main questions are: Is there any problem on reading during dialysis? Is there any pain carrying the book for so long? Is there any difficulty on sliding pages? Is there some aid that already helps holding the book?

I'd like to have some inputs or key words that I can use to start my part of analysis into the world of dialysis."
