I was booked into this unit again this year (November 2008) and after arriving at Faro Airport went to say hello and double check they were expecting me. I received a warm welcome and they were expecting me (always reassuring!). However, I discovered they had a sister unit in Portimao where I was staying and the Portimao unit very kindly arranged for me to swap so, I dialysed in Portimao instead of Faro. I have written my comments about the Portimao Hospital on that visitor comments section on this website. I recommend both this Faro hospital and it's sister hospital in Portimao.

Had 6 x 4 hour sessions there in August 2007. Good modern hospital with modern machines and excellent staff. On each session you were visited by the resident Doctor. You also had refreshments of a drink and roll. Would not hesitate to recommend it and would use it again if necessary. Agree that initially it was difficult to find but got a taxi there the first time and then drove myself.

Would do it again, no quibble. The unit was clean. Visitors are not normally allowed to sit with patients but my wife was allowed to sit with me the first night because it was quiet but was not allowed in the unit on subsequent visits.
Staff all very friendly and always someone about who could speak English.
Unit was difficult to find ( we enquired at three hospitals before finding it ) but once found, it was easy to get to thereafter. We tried to get leaflets and directions from the dialysis centre without success.
First turning on the right after the Modelo supermarket on the Sao Bras de Alportel road in Faro. The dialysis centre is on the right, next to the school/college.

Yes, this is a great unit. The unit is modern and well kitted out. The unit caters for local dialysis patients downstairs and holiday dialysis patients upstairs.
There were about 8 holiday patients there (July) but no British. Most nurses spoke some English and the doctor was a good English speaker. You were supplied with a bread roll and coffee or a cold drink during dialysis. The dialysis itself was excellent and certainly as good as the UK. The unit is initially hard to find so please get accurate directions or you will drive around Faro for hours. Once found it is easy to get to again. It took me 35 minutes to drive out from Albufeira. Follow signs for the Hospital and then the Polytechnique University. It is near the Ministry of Commerce.

I found your comments on the dialysis center at Faro very useful.I am going out there this Sunday for two weeks and have had the same problem finding the unit on the map.
Is is on the street 'Rue Da Policia De Seguaranca Publica' ?
Did they supply you with any food or drink during dialysis ?

This centre is excellent. The Staff were really helpful and put you at ease. There were nurses checking with you every few minutes that everything was all right. There was also a doctor doing rounds. It really made the difference to our holiday and allayed any fears we had about having to have dialysis in Portugal. The contact name we were given was on the end of the phone if there were any problems or to find out what time to pick up from the unit. She couldn't have been more helpful. The only problem we had was finding the unit on a map. Once you knew where to go then it was easy to find. Would suggest ringing the unit to ask for directions. Anyone wanting to go to Portugal to the Algarve, we would recommend this unit without hesitation - first class.
